Celebrating Black History Month With Young Children

Hi Friends!

We are halfway through February with Valentine’s Day right around the corner and Black History Month celebrations happening all month long! With raising two brown boys it’s important to me to teach them about their haritage, no better time to do so than now! I had so much fun planning activities this month during this special time of year. If you‘re in need of some Black History Month activities to do with your children, visit my Pinterest board and give it a follow. I saved book lists, crafts and activities best for ages 2-5. What We’re Learning:

Themes I’m emphasizing this month are love, kindness and diversity! We know that God loves us and as servants of Christ we are called to love others.

What We’re Doing:

Jesus Loves The Children Of The World Craft: We took our mail advertising and turned it into something beautiful! I cut out as many letters as I could find in the ads and Isaiah and I did a letter hunt to spell out “Jesus Loves The Children” on a picture of the world we colored together! If I could do this again I would include pictures of children all over the world to paste on. We had fun! This was an excellent fine motor activity when Isaiah had to pick up each letter one by one to carefully add it to our picture. I also liked how we got to sneak in some alphabet practice!

Let Freedom Ring Bell Activity:

I found this activity on pinterest and thought it was gold! Making freedom bell ringers from plastic cups, a bell and ribbon. I'm extremely picky about what activities we do and it's hard to find something for young toddlers to get involved in without them getting bored; this project was something Isaiah found fun and it was right on his level. We read Dr. Kings speech and rang our bells together in harmony! I found a playlist on Spotify called Spiritual Hyms that we could listen to - we ended up doing a bit of music and movement to it. Next year I'd love to add in some play silks!

Books We’re Reading:

I chose this book because it gives amazing insight to history in a way a child can understand. Isaiah loves the pictures and we would strike up convos on what we saw most nights. We're reading two stories a night for the month - it's been a great addition to our evening routine! Adorable and info packed. Follow my link to Amazon to purchase!

Happy Celebrating!
